A surfer works his day job in the city
to fund the affair with his true love.
From his door, to his car, to a building,
he will wonder why he's doing what he does.
He says, Oh yes, this helps to keep me balanced,
for the sea she does not criticize or judge.
So I'll go back and forth and in and out,
back and forth and in and out, my friends,
until I wind up in the ocean once again.
Well, a priestess she taught me to be holy
She said making life would make me more like God.
So we set about creating things together,
though our artistry was just an afterthought.
She said, Don't act like you don't know what you're doing;
all these memories are buried in your bones.
We just go back and forth and in and out,
back and forth and in and out again,
until we wind up laying breathless on the bed.
Well my friends and I, we travel 'round the country
singing songs in cities, villages, and towns.
Then we fall in love with people and locations
even though we never get to stick around.
Tony, yes, I do think life is easy.
You know, all you've got to do is fill your lungs,
and they'll go back and forth and in and out,
back and forth and in and out, my friend,
'til we see our favorite faces once again.
Well the seas were so much higher than expected,
and the waves they nearly swept us all away.
That ocean does not have a sense of malice,
she just goes where she goes everyday.
Well I said, Captain, now you make it look so easy
And he said, All you've got to do is hold on,
and we'll go back and forth and in and out,
back and forth and in and out again
and we'll do our best to keep from getting wet,
'til we wind up in the ocean once again
'cause we all wind up in the ocean in the end.
