Standing strong he let the old cogs run
winding down the river weirs
manual work that he'd always done
dependably for many years
Evening would come and he'd ramble along
the banks with his tools of trade
boats sailed by as the reeds bow
gently with the wash they made
passing by the cinema would take him home
not since a child he'd been
But you'd never see him in a restaurant
only lived within his means
Happy though he was with a simple life
baffled seeing others dreams
Only felt complete ever working on
and living by the flowing stream
So the sun shines above his town
Welcoming another day
And the still water rises up,
even on a Christmas day
Everybody saw there was nothing like
the rainfall that came their way
People close their doors and windows to try
and the keep the water well at bay
Do we understand the simple things in life
Heaven may be what we know
Falling from the mill late that night,
the waters finally took him home
So the sun shines above this town,
Welcoming another day
And the still water rises up,
even on a Christmas day
