When leaves die, falling from the lowest branch
The top holds life to boast of it
Here and five streets down, and in between
From the sidewalk, shy and soaked in sleet
All the houses look the same
With varied resident surnames
My hands will not withdraw from the pockets in which they reside
Winter's breathing on my neck
Brisk or biting, I don't care
Let us go defy the air
Walk through the city blocks
Shut up when we need to talk
I am not afraid of what God did make
In everything a friend is what a friend told me
And I believe it all
Evening we'll sing a fire into flame until our lungs collapse and we're out of key
The windows make it hard to see
Past the frost into the dancing tress
What was once below a breeze
Slowly howls us into sleep
